Determinate or Indeterminate?
what does that mean?

For a tomato, it's a way to determine the size your plant will ultimately get.

Determinate tomatoes produce fruit at the ends of their branches, so they stop growing while still short.  Their fruit usually ripens all at once and are then finished for the season- after which the plant may be pulled (this is great if you want to get your canning/freezing done all at once). These tomatoes behave well in simple cages or tied to a stake in windy areas but do not prune or pinch their stems back or you will remove flowers and fruit.

Indeterminate tomatoes on the other hand,  produce fruit at intervals along their constantly growing branches and will keep growing until frost kills them.  They will produce fruit all season long and will need a sturdy support if you are going to keep them off the ground (their stems will root where-ever they touch open ground).
These tomatoes are ideal for staking and pruning (usually to two stems by pinching out all the unwanted new growth that sprouts between the stem and leaf. Tomato talk: "crotch," Then tie to a stake).
