My favorite recipe for Humming bird food:

  • Four cups boiling water
  • One cup table sugar
(four parts water to one to one part sugar) *don't use artificial sweeteners or honey because it will make them sick!

This recipe will fill four 8oz. feeders
(save any leftovers in a canning jar or other lidded container in the refrigerator for up to a week)

Bring water to a rolling boil in sauce pan. Dissolve sugar in water and let cool completely before filling feeders.
You don't need the red food coloring at all. It's not good for them.
The hummers are smart and recognize the feeders without it. ( you can tie a red ribbon on a feeder without red on it to help them find it~ this does work ).

You can make this recipe a little more concentrated for cooler weather by only adding three cups water to one cup sugar. This gives them more energy to stay warm.

And Please Leave you feeders up as long as possible for the stragglers who are migrating! Your feeders may be what helps that little  hummer survive his long journey!
